Hermes @ South Coast Plaza

Posted April 12, 2023

The design of Hermes South Coast Plaza was complex, combining many different design elements and finishes to create a beautiful and unique store. Raymond completed interior metal stud framing, exterior façade metal stud framing, exterior gypsum board sheathing, interior drywall, GFRG finishing, acoustical batt insulation, and installation of hollow metal door frames for Hirsch Construction. Raymond also provided QML layout for all finishes including millwork, and supervision of all trades.

The Hermes South Coast Plaza store has floor to ceiling floating merchandise islands that display Hermes products. These islands consist of millwork, metal framing, wood framing, GFRG and drywall that follow a complex serpentine radius and terminate into vertical round columns. These columns are not typical with inconsistent measurements (some stretched so they appear to be oblong and some with multiple columns that intersect and form a shape reminiscent of a figure 8). These columns intersect the drywall ceiling and form a ceiling reveal that includes a perimeter GFRG light cove; this cove follows the same serpentine shape as the merchandise islands. The islands are finished in a walnut millwork cladding and level 5 finish drywall that intersects GFRG shapes at the floor, ceiling, and perimeter of all niches.

Unique to this location, Hermes South Coast Plaza boasts Rammed Earth partitions. These partitions were managed as their own unique projects and began with a load bearing design due to the weight of the “earth.” They were built to an engineered set of drawings within a separate schedule for each location.

The project included more than 700 linear feet of a perimeter HVAC return/supply slot. This 2”x2” slot ran throughout the project and appears at almost every condition where a drywall partition meets a drywall ceiling.

Raymond had a challenge on this Hermes project of tying together and properly aligning all finishes, while maintaining straight planes for these installations. Raymond worked hard to provide a quality finished product with a minimal punch list, and after completing Hermes South Coast Plaza, Raymond was recommended for a new buildout of Hermes at Topanga Canyon.

Hermes was recently awarded for Construction Excellence by the WWCCA and the AWCI.
